Commissioning a Sculpture
|

At work on "Guardian,"
commissioned by North Shore Unitarian Church, Deerfield, Illinois. |
What is important
to you? You may be passionate about your family, your history, or
about an institution's mission. You may wish to pay tribute to special
person or to a noble idea. Or you may simply wish to bring beauty to a
place you love.
I give physical, lasting expression to
your passions and commitments. I have worked with individuals,
corporations, cities, and non-profit institutions to translate their
passions into works of art, executing commissions costing from $500 to
$75,000. I have created sculptures for both indoor and outdoor spaces, in
both private and public settings.

Every commission is unique. I
bring my particular creative vision to every project, but I do not bring
preconceived ideas. Designs grow out of our conversations about your needs
and interests. If you like the work shown on these pages, feel free to
call to discuss your ideas for a possible commission.
You may wonder whether what you have in
mind is something I could do. You may be unsure about the
process. Please call me anytime at (603) 284-6335
or
email me and I will be happy
to answer your questions.

Starting your sculpture ideas in
motion can be as simple as our sitting down in your living room or
talking on the phone to discuss the possibilities.
For larger projects I build a team
that can include decision makers, fundraisers, donors, architects,
engineers, facilities managers and contractors-- whatever is needed to
bring the project to fruition. |

How the process works.
To follow the
progress of a commission I recently worked on, see
"Sisters."
Step 1. We explore possibilities.
We discuss your needs and tastes, as well the requirements of size,
setting, and budget. We settle on a general approach, including choice of
materials and possibilities for imagery.
Step 2. I produce a design. Depending
on the project’s complexity and budget, a design can consist of
sketches, scale drawings and / or a scale model. The design fee is
typically 7.5% of the budget, with a minimum fee of $2000. Design fees are
non-refundable and are not applied to the cost of producing the sculpture.
With a small commission, or when the design is already well-understood (as
when I’m producing something similar to an existing sculpture), you may
wish to forgo the design / approval process and move directly to step 3.

Step 3. You approve. When you
approve the design, we sign a contract that spells out a production
timetable, a schedule of payments and any other commitments regarding
fabrication and installation.
Step 4. I produce the sculpture. Once
I receive an initial payment of 50% of the total budget, I begin work on
the sculpture. Final payment is due when the finished sculpture is
delivered (and / or installed, if I am doing the installation).
